It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of NACE Past PresiGeorge_Haysdent George F. Hays, who died on 4 January 2026 at the age of 87. His wife, Beverly, has asked me to share this sad news with you.

George’s distinguished professional career spanned more than three decades at Ashland Specialty Chemical Company, where he served as Technology Manager in an international capacity. His expertise lay in the design and application of monitoring and control technologies for industrial water and waste systems. After retiring from Ashland in 1999, he continued to contribute to the field as a consultant.

In addition to his technical achievements, George was an accredited professional mediator. Along with his wife Beverly, he established Hays Mediation Service, providing support and guidance to many.

Most of you will remember George for his highly active involvement in AMPP. As NACE International President from 2004 to 2005, he was driving the organisation’s groundbreaking decision to offer free access to standards for its members, which resulted in a significant increase in  membership.

George was also one of the founders of the World Corrosion Organization, an umbrella body representing over 30 societies across five continents. He served as its Director-General from 2006 until 2016 and acted as the organisation’s liaison to the United Nations, dedicating countless hours  to advocating for corrosion control as a cause worthy of global attention.

In recent years, George’s health gradually declined. Nevertheless, he remained sharp of mind until he passed away peacefully at home in Rockaway, New Jersey, on 4 January 2026, with his beloved wife by his side.

I consider it a privilege to have known George, both as a distinguished professional and as a dear friend.

Condolences may be sent to: 2103 Franklin Ln, Rockaway, NJ 07866

Kind regards,
Sytze Huizinga
